Osteoporosis is a bone disease that affects millions of people worldwide, especially women who have gone through menopause. It weakens bones, making them fragile and more susceptible to fractures. While osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease, it often goes undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. To raise awareness about osteoporosis and to encourage early detection, the PMH Foundation organized an osteoporosis brigade during October 2022.
The PMH Osteoporosis Brigade by PMHF provided several services to the community of Punta de Mita and surrounding areas. The services included bone density testing, educational sessions on osteoporosis prevention and management, and consultations with a specialist in bone health.
Bone density testing is a non-invasive test that measures the density of bones in the spine, hip, or other parts of the body.
The test is quick, painless, and can detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs. Educational sessions on osteoporosis prevention and management provided valuable information to the community on how to prevent osteoporosis by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
Consultations with a specialist in bone health provided an opportunity for individuals to ask questions and receive personalized recommendations for managing their osteoporosis.
